Modbus TCP
Wraps standard Modbus frames inside a TCP/IP packet via the MBAP header, removing serial-line collisions and distance limits, and enabling multi-master architecture over standard industrial network switches.
Type
Industrial Ethernet (TCP/IP)
Typical Latency
5ms–20ms.
Hardware Requirements
Standard Ethernet infrastructure (Cat5e/Cat6, RJ45), managed industrial switches, TCP port 502 allocation.
Security
None by default — vulnerable to interception; requires industrial firewalls, VLAN segmentation or a secure VPN tunnel.
Typical Use Case
Modern PLC banks, remote distributed I/O, Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) monitoring, cleanroom AHUs.
Connection Parameters
- Default port
- TCP 502
- Max connections
- Up to 16 concurrent masters
- Keep-alive
- Enabled (typ. 3000ms)
- Socket type
- Asynchronous TCP stream
