Industrial Ethernet (CIP over TCP/UDP)

EtherNet/IP

Implements the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) over standard Ethernet — explicit messaging over TCP for configuration/diagnostics and implicit (I/O) messaging over UDP for real-time cyclic data exchange.

Type

Industrial Ethernet (CIP over TCP/UDP)

Typical Latency

1ms–10ms for I/O data depending on RPI configuration.

Hardware Requirements

Standard managed Ethernet switches, Cat5e/Cat6 cabling, EtherNet/IP-certified NICs, TCP/UDP port 44818.

Security

CIP Security adds TLS/DTLS transport security, device authentication and access-control policies.

Typical Use Case

Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLC ecosystems, packaging lines, distributed I/O racks, VFD and drive networks.

Connection Parameters

Default port
TCP/UDP 44818
Messaging
Explicit (TCP) & Implicit I/O (UDP)
RPI range
Typically 1ms–750ms
Topology
Star, linear (DLR ring supported)
