Telecontrol Protocol (Utility SCADA)

DNP3

Distributed Network Protocol 3 is designed for reliable SCADA communication over noisy, low-bandwidth links common in utility networks, with structured object addressing and unsolicited event reporting.

Type

Telecontrol Protocol (Utility SCADA)

Typical Latency

Sub-second for event-driven reporting over IP; higher over legacy serial/radio links.

Hardware Requirements

Serial (RS485) or TCP/IP (DNP3 over IP) links, RTUs and IEDs supporting DNP3 outstation profiles.

Security

IEC 62351 / Secure DNP3 adds authentication and encryption on top of the base protocol.

Typical Use Case

Electric utility substations, water/wastewater SCADA, oil & gas remote terminal units (RTUs).

Connection Parameters

Default port
TCP/UDP 20000 (DNP3 over IP)
Data objects
Binary/analog inputs & outputs, counters
Reporting
Unsolicited event reporting supported
Media
Serial RS485 or IP network
